Reality Check
Fitness gets redefined through a personal challenge
I used to religiously work out six days a week – alternating between lifting weights and aerobics classes.
I used to pop vitamins every day.
I used to be a vegetarian. (A close encounter with a Thanksgiving buffet terminated any lofty ambitions of keeping that up.)
I used to do a lot of things to stay healthy. Apparently, my body doesn’t care even if I used to be an Olympic gymnast. The other day, it became painfully obvious that it wants to know, What have you done for me lately?
The answer to that question was “not a whole lot,” when I found myself loudly gasping for breath – totally in synch with co-worker Deb Wezensky – as we made our first attempt at running in preparation for a mini-triathlon.
During the last decade or so, I’ve neglected to consistently do the things that every living, breathing American over the age of 12 knows by now: eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and exercise five to six days a week.
It’s not an impossible formula, yet it seems to elude so many of us.
That’s why six staffers here at Indianapolis Woman decided to make another go at developing a healthy lifestyle by enlisting the help of a personal trainer – and one other. For most of us, the overall goal is consistency, making changes that will last a lifetime. (See page 104)
Our team also decided to share our journey with you on our website – www.indianapoliswoman.com – for an extra boost of accountability. Look for the IW “Let’s Get Fit!” Fitness Challenge.
If you’re so inclined – and you should be – follow the tips offered by Mike “Mr. Motion” White, the owner of Body-N-Motion Personal Training, as he coaches us toward healthier bodies.
It doesn’t matter what you did 10, 20 years ago – or even a couple of months ago. What are you doing for yourself now?
