If you’re tired of the same old jewelry and want something more organic in your wardrobe, consider one of the season’s most popular trends in the world of accessories: feathers.

Whether they’re on a subtle hoop earring, a scarf to guard against the chill of air conditioning or a statement necklace, feathers are an easy way to dress up just about any outfit.

The Trend Extends
As with most trends, the popularity of feather hair extensions started with celebrities. Steven Tyler, Ke$ha and Miley Cyrus are just a few who have been seen sporting the latest in hair flair.

Here in Indy, it seems the fad of feather hair extensions knows no age limits.

Sarah Cooper of Bobby Cooper Salon says stylists have seen customers from age 4 to age 60 wanting to add some plumage to their ‘dos.

“It’s a little bead that attaches to your hair,” she explains. “It lasts on average about three weeks.”

You can wash and style the clip-ins just like your regular hair. Feathers are reusable, so you don’t always have to buy a new one.

“We’ve been customizing designs in them and colors of them for our clients,” Cooper says. Those with short hair have added them to their bangs, while those with long hair often want a “chunkier” piece showing through the bottom.

Those with a 9-to-5 would be happy to know that the clip-ins are removable.

“They can take it out for their jobs,” Cooper says, “and they can put it in whenever they want.”

The trend isn’t without controversy though, as some have pointed out the animal rights issues surrounding the use of real feathers. To combat that, Cooper says, the salon has started making its own clip-ins out of human hair.
