During the last few years of their three-decade friendship, Terry Burns joked often with her dear friend Sandra Cheek about the ways their bodies were changing. As women past 50, heading fast for the outskirts of 60, they agreed that hiding the aging process was turning into more of a challenge.

Burns also teased frequently with her three sisters, noting humorously that the gene pool had not exactly been kind to them. In fact, the sisters decided that “hoody” eyes seemed to run in the family.

When Burns stood quietly in front of the mirror in her Monrovia home, however, she didn’t feel like making wise cracks. She no longer saw a match between her face and who she was on the inside. She worried that the deep laugh lines and crow’s feet might make a less than favorable impression on potential clients. Would her career as a business consultant soon be affected by the fact that she often looked like she was in desperate need of a nap?

“My eyes were always tired looking. I had wrinkles in my dimples and a waddle under my chin. I did everything I could do to fight off the ravages of time.”

Burns humorously makes note of the fact that she nominated herself three times for the Indianapolis Woman Dream Makeover opportunity.

“When she applied the first time, it surprised me,” Cheek says of her friend. “But then again, Terry’s never been afraid of anything.”

Those first two attempts resulted in semi-finalist status. And the third time was the charm.

Burns is the 2011 winner of the Indianapolis Woman Dream Makeover Promotion.

“I believe every woman deserves to be the best she can and shine from the inside out,” she says. “We should be able to age gracefully. There’s nothing that ages more poorly than a woman’s ego.”

When she was invited to speak before a panel of judges about why the makeover was important to her, she simply spoke from her heart.

“I have 58 years of life experiences,” says Burns, who married her high school sweetheart 40 years ago. The couple has four sons. “I have hard-earned wisdom and blessings. I like who I am, but I don’t want to look like life has sucked away my vitality.”

Though she had never undergone surgery before, Burns says she was never apprehensive about the procedures, which included a lip lift, upper and lower lift of her eyelids and a facelift.

Recovery was very manageable. For 24 hours after surgery, Burns was required to wear compression bandages. But she managed to make a joke about that too.

“You kinda look more like a mummy than a mommy for a while,” she says with a laugh. “And my boys did some ‘blackmail pictures’ too.”

Ten days after the surgery, Burns happily sprinted back into her busy life schedule as a business consultant and community volunteer.

But this time, her exterior better matched her high-energy spirit.

“I only have to look at one chin,” she giggles about the post-surgery changes. “My face reflects me better. When I see myself, I don’t have the distraction of bags and wrinkles anymore.”

After the facial procedures healed, Burns prepared for the next step –– a brighter smile.

Maybe others didn’t look as critically as she did at her slightly crooked smile. “But I noticed it,” Burns says.

More happily than she had ever entered a dentist office before, Burns spent a total of 20 hours in the dentist chair, and the dazzling result was 17 veneers.

“I look like I have a perfect, white, happy smile,” she says with a laugh. “I keep looking in the mirror. And I get surprised every time.”

Turkle & Associates
When she met with Dr. Janet Turkle, cosmetic and plastic surgeon with Turkle & Associates, Burns expressed to Turkle that she thought her wrinkles were starting to make her look sad and tired and that her chin was a problem area. She also had some unwanted lines on her forehead.

“She felt like the external appearance impacted her interaction with other people,” Turkle says.

To address the jowls around her neck and jaw line, Turkle performed a facelift. She also gave Burns a lip lift, which creates a fuller lip and is a more permanent solution than lip fillers. Turkle also performed a lower and upper eye lift to brighten Burns’ overall appearance.

“She’s got really pretty brown eyes, and I thought that would enhance that,” Turkle says. “I think it really has.”

The surgery was performed April 27. The next day, Burns returned to Turkle’s office to have the compression bandage removed. It didn’t take long for her to bounce back.

“The painful part was waiting for the swelling to go down,” Burns says. “The first week, I didn’t go out much. I had a little bruising after 10 days, but I covered it up.”

“Everything went very well,” Turkle says. “We were lucky to have a good candidate. It was one of those things where someone looks good before she starts, so it’s easy to have a good result after. She looks refreshed and renewed but doesn’t look like someone she never was.

“She still looks like Terry.”

Jack Nicewander, DDS
As part of her Dream Makeover, Burns also received a new smile from Jack Nicewander, DDS.

Burns didn’t like the shade of her teeth or the fact that they were slightly out of line.

“She had teeth where they weren’t supposed to be,” Nicewander says. “It didn’t look natural.”

To address both issues, Nicewander opted for veneers, which allow him to create a more ideal smile.

After taking photos and X-rays, a model was made of the desired final result. This was sent to lab technician Keith Kamin in Westfield, who created the 17 porcelain veneers that were bonded onto Burns’ teeth for her new smile.

“It’s a laborious process to make them fit well,” Nicewander says. “(Keith) is very instrumental in this. We couldn’t do it without him.”

Nicewander says there’s not much of a recovery process after receiving veneers. It may take some time getting used to the new bite and there may be some sensitivity, which Burns did not experience.

He’s definitely pleased with the result.

“We’re very happy. What’s more important to us is that Terry is happy and she was pleased with them. If they’re happy, I’m happy.

“Terry was just a sweetheart to work with.”

The Secret Ingredient
As a business consultant, Burns has to look put-together. She owns a lot of business suits, wears black often and calls her style “edited conservative.”

“They have to take you seriously,” she says of her clients.

But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t like to inject some fun into her wardrobe.

“I go for the classic look and put in a pop of whatever’s current that season,” she says, whether that’s a certain color or an animal print.

At The Secret Ingredient, owner Jeanne Rush and manager Susi Eckert helped Burns choose three outfits to take her into the fall season.

Her abstract-print Donna Morgan dress features a wide neckline, 3/4-length sleeves and is paired with brown leggings and a belt with bronze details.

Hammered bronze earrings, a statement necklace and bracelet, and brown clogs complete the look.

A dark purple J’envie jacket is an ideal complement to Burns’ coloring. It’s paired with J’envie black pants, Marjorie Baer silver earrings, a snakeskin belt with purple stone details and black high heels.

Finally, Rush and Eckert chose for Burns a shimmering blue coat dress by Samuel Dong, complemented with silver accessories, a wide black belt and black high heels.

Rush offers three pieces of advice when shopping this season: “Try different things; always accessorize and buy what you love.”

Bobby Cooper Salon
Bobby Cooper, owner of Bobby Cooper Salon, says Burns didn’t necessarily like or dislike her hair. She simply was ready for a change and was “up for anything.”

Cooper’s inspiration came from a photo he saw in a magazine.

“Using pictures can often help in the communication between stylists and clients,” he says. “When I showed Terry the picture, she loved it.”

Burns’ hair had a nice, shiny texture and many layers. Cooper decided to let some of the layers grow out so her hair would appear thicker. He left some layers for fullness and to balance Burns’ round face. Bangs placed the emphasis on her eyes.

Cooper says he wanted to keep her new color fairly close to her natural shade to keep it low maintenance. “Then I added some caramel/golden highlights to bring out her eye color,” he says.

Burns’ new look fits well with the salon’s belief that hair is a woman’s biggest accessory.

“It can dictate, especially for women, if you’ll have a good day or a bad day,” Cooper says. “We give (women) something stylish, something that matches their lifestyle –– how they can maintain the style at home –– and something that makes them walk around looking and feeling good.

“I think that’s exactly what Terry’s hair does for her new look,” he adds. “It’s stylish, sophisticated and it fits Terry. She looks energized, fresh and rejuvenated.”

Beautification & Makeup [More Info]
T’ai Rising-Moore, Awkward Beauty
When Burns sat down for her makeup, she told freelance makeup artist and stylist T’ai Rising-Moore to “do her thing.”

Rising-Moore avoided any harsh makeup that can age a woman and kept Burns’ look soft and light by using peach/pink tones on both the cheeks and lips.

“She has a really great face,” Rising-Moore says.

Rising-Moore started with Burns’ eyes, using a taupe cream shadow followed by a matte smoky lavender shadow toward the center of the eyelid. An eggplant/brown eyeliner was smudged into the lashes and subtle false eyelashes that blended with Burns’ natural lashes were applied. Rising-Moore completed the eyes by lightly filling in the eyebrows.

On her face, she first used moisturizer and primer. She used a non-shimmery contour cream to create shape along the jaw line, temples and forehead. Next, Rising-Moore canceled out dark under-eye circles with a peach-toned concealer. She blended a soft pink onto the cheekbones and bronzer to contour.

Rising-Moore canceled out Burns’ natural lip color with a small bit of foundation before applying a warm-toned neutral lipstick.

“I can create the look how I want it,” she says of that technique. “It gives it a nice, clean line.” A translucent setting powder completed the look.

“I loved working on her,” Rising-Moore says of Burns. “She was definitely a gem.”
