.) The spotlight shone on local personalities as they wowed the crowd at Indianapolis’ own version of Dancing with the Stars. Held at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, Dancing with Indy’s Stars featured locals paired with Arthur Murray Dance Studio instructors for dances like the cha cha and tango. Indianapolis Fire Department firefighter Angela Hiestand took home the top prize. The evening also included dinner and live music by The Wright Brothers. Proceeds benefited Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent.
.) The 13th annual Jazz Brunch at the Downtown Hyatt Regency, hosted by the Circle City Chapter of The Links Inc., lived up to its theme: “A Salute to Men Who Inspire Excellence in Education.” Former news anchor Barbara Boyd emceed, honoring Greg Porter, Nathaniel Jones, Dr. George Rawls, Dr. Edward Wheeler and Dr. Euguene White. Krash Krew dancers and saxophonists Gregg Bacon and Bryan Thompson performed. The event benefited the George H. Rawls M.D. Scholarship Fund.
.) Indy’s most chic filled Eskenazi Hall in IUPUI’s Herron School of Art for its largest fundraiser, Art Couture. More than 400 guests took in a runway show featuring the “wearable art” of Herron students and other artists. A true culinary experience followed, with attendees sampling fare from many of Indy’s best restaurants. A 100 for $100 art sale, silent auction, dancing and dessert also were included. Event proceeds supported Herron’s community outreach initiatives, like the Herron Galleries and Visiting Artist Lecture Series.
.) A humid day didn’t deter thousands from taking a break and heading to Monument Circle for a cool summer treat of strawberries, shortcake, ice cream and whipped cream. More than 300 volunteers at the 43rd annual Strawberry Festival, hosted by Christ Church Cathedral, dished out about six tons of strawberries and 20,000 homemade shortcakes. Proceeds supported community outreach programs at local, state, national and international levels. This year, flood-stricken areas in Indiana also received funds.
.) As part of its ongoing mission to help minorities and disadvantaged people achieve economic equality, the Indianapolis Urban League hosted an annual luncheon at the Westin Indianapolis. Joyce E. Tucker, vice president of global diversity and employee rights at The Boeing Company, served as the keynote speaker. She discussed the benefits of diversity strategies in the workplace. The event also highlighted the success story of Edward Allen, who gave a few remarks on how he has personally benefited from the Urban League’s efforts. Kate Williams of Fox 59 served as emcee.
.) Hundreds of women took refuge from a rainy, gray day inside downtown’s Conrad hotel at Ovar’Coming Together’s Bag Event –– To Conquer Ovarian Cancer. While sipping champagne cocktails, guests browsed the silent auction, which featured tables and tables of donated handbags. There was something for every taste, as styles ranged from the everyday to cocktail-party crazy. Designer names up for grabs included Prada, Gucci, Coach and Fendi, among others. A luncheon followed. Money raised went toward Ovar’Coming Together’s mission of research, support and education.
